PROP 36
Increase penalties for theft and drug trafficking
What would it do?
Proposition 36 would reclassify some misdemeanor theft and drug crimes potentially raising them to felony level.
The measure would also create a new category of crime — a “treatment-mandated felony.” People who complete drug treatment will have their case dismissed. In Long Beach, anyone who agrees to treatment and completes the program, will have all criminal charges dropped.
Why is it on the ballot?
Ten years ago, voters approved Proposition 47, which sought to reduce California’s prison overcrowding by making some theft and drug crimes into misdemeanors. Since then, California has seen a dramatic increase in drug abuse and smash-and-grab robberies.
On Friday 13, 2024, the Long Beach City Prosecutor Doug Haubert will be hosting an in-person town hall at the Alter Society 230 Pine Ave, Long Beach CA 90802 8:30am-9:30am to help explain proposition 36.
