LBCP Summer Interns 2017

Edgar Herrera Castaneda
Edgar Herrera Castaneda served as a Summer Intern with the Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office in 2017. Following his internship, he gained experience in the public sector with the CSU Long Beach Police Department and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He later transitioned into the private sector, working on corporate risk and safety matters with Thumbtack as a Senior Case Manager, and serving on the advisory board for Marketplace Risk, a private-sector coalition focused on protecting users online.

James Hebish
James Hebish served as a Summer Intern with the Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office in 2017. He earned a Bachelor of Science magna cum laude from the University of Southern California in 2020, where he was a recipient of the Director’s Scholar Award. James went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in 2025, serving as a Teaching Assistant for Introduction to Property and as President of the Commercial Real Estate Law Society. Following law school, James joined Debevoise & Plimpton LLP as a corporate law clerk in the firm’s Insurance M&A Group and maintained an active pro bono practice with a focus on immigration matters.
Mia Hernandez-Perez
Mia Hernandez-Perez served as a Summer Intern with the Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office in 2017. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Political Science from California State University, Long Beach and pursued a professional career in public policy and government administration. Her experience includes serving as a Field Representative for California State Senator Lena A. Gonzalez, applying her academic background to public-sector and civic-focused work.
Monica Gutierrez
Monica Gutierrez served as a Summer Intern with the Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office in 2017. She earned a Master’s degree in Criminology, Law & Society from University of California, Irvine. Monica built her career in victim advocacy, working as a Victim Services Representative with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, where she assisted families in homicide cases under the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s jurisdiction. She later completed additional certification coursework in Crime and Intelligence Analysis.

Elijah Jefferson
Elijah Jefferson served as a Summer Intern with the Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office in 2017. He earned his undergraduate degree from California State University, Long Beach in 2020 and his Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles in 2023. Elijah practices as a litigation associate with Squire Patton Boggs, where his work focuses on product liability and consumer warranty claims in the automotive industry. His experience also includes defending clients in high-exposure matters involving wildfire litigation, wrongful death, and catastrophic injury.
